U.S. veteran burial benefit

U.S. military veterans are entitled to many burial benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs. These benefits include a burial flag, headstone or marker, burial in a National cemetery, and Military Funeral Honors.

As of Jan. 1, 2000, the Department of Defense began providing military funeral honors according to Section 578 of Public Law 106-65 of the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2000. Military Funeral Honors are obtained through the funeral home.

Local veterans organizations frequently assist in providing military funeral honors. Acadiana Veterans Honor Guard is available upon request to participate. Please contact Commander Tom Green at 337-534- 3680 for more information.

Please note that these benefits are available upon presentation of proper documentation, which includes the veterans discharge papers, or DD 214. The funeral home cannot proceed without proper documentation. If you do not have your discharge papers, please contact your local service officer to obtain them. Keep them in a safe place for availability at the time of need.

Additional benefits include burial allowance for eligible veterans. For more information, http://www.cem.va.gov/burial_benefits/ or contact your VA service officer.

Carencro Veterans Memorial

The City of Carencro is proud to honor all military veterans with this Veterans Memorial, which is located adjacent to City Hall at 210 East St. Peter Street. Designed by Lynn Guidry Architect, the memorial includes a base of brick pavers engraved with the names of past and present veterans honored by their loved ones, marble benches and 16 granite “soldiers” or small pillars.

These soldiers are engraved with the names of veterans killed in action from Carencro. We are very proud that all benches and “soldiers” have sponsorship. Memorial bricks are available for sale.

Seven of the available 16 squares are filled with memorial bricks. Orders are currently being accepted for Section B-4, which houses 39 bricks.

If you know of a veteran from Carencro who was killed in action, please call 337.896.8481. To purchase a brick or wish to make a monetary donation, please contact Gwen at 886-7002 or Candy at 886-7003. http://carencro.org/vetsmemorial_3.php
